Key trends in social media – are you making the most of them?


According to Statista, there are now more than 2.5 billion social media users worldwide and in January of this year, more than 300 million people were reportedly sharing stories on Instagram and WhatsApp separately every day.

It is predicted that there will be more than three billion social media users in 2021 – just three years from now – so if you are not actively utilising social in your business already, it’s time to to embrace the channels. Social media can no longer be ignored.

  • With social media, you can reach a potential audience for free and with very little resource
  • You can utilise organic posts or, for a fee, you can be more strategic with social media advertising
  • With targeted ads, you can reach very specific groups based on their demographics, interests, past behaviour and more

In 2017, Statistica and LinkedIn reported the following user base findings:

  • Facebook: 2.07 billion monthly active users
  • Instagram: 800 million monthly active users
  • Twitter: 330 million monthly active users
  • LinkedIn: 500 million members

So what’s new in the world of social and what should you be looking out for?

Firstly, any social content you create needs to be mobile friendly. Increasingly, people are using their smartphones primarily to access social content.

Social messaging needs to be part of your client and prospect communication strategy. There are reportedly more people using the top four social messaging apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, WeChat and Viber) than the top four social media apps (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn).

Chatbots are here to stay and video content remains the most popular content type. Consider utilising both in your wider communications strategy.
